We are please to announce Two-Handed Warriors Associate Editor, Dr. Timothy J. Basselin has been named to the faculty of Dallas Theological Seminary’s new Department of Media Arts in Worship.  Tim received his PhD in Theology and Culture from Fuller Theological Seminary, where he studied under Dr. Rob Johnston (Reel Spirituality), a pioneer in the field of Theology and Film.  His dissertation on the impact Flannery O’Connor’s disability on her theology and writing was published last year by Baylor University Press as  Flannery O’Connor: Writing a Theology of Disabled Humanity (2013).

I first met Tim in a Theology and Film study group at the Evangelical Theological Society‘s 2012 meeting in San Francisco . I was immediately impressed by his rare combination of theological nuance, cultural competency, and Christlike character. We ended up spending a great deal of time together over the course of the conference and have stayed in touch ever since. Not only is Tim a wonderful partner in our work with Two Handed Warriors, his insights into spiritual formation and weakness have deeply impacted my walk with God, especially as I watched him put them into practice during his academic sojourn through multiple colleges throughout the Chicago area before coming to Dallas.

Dallas Theological Seminary, one of the largest institutions in the Association of Theological Schools, created the Department of Media Arts and Worship in response to the increased popularity and enrollment in their media arts program. The change reflects students’ growing interest in worship studies and fulfills the original design of the program to provide training in worship as one of three emphases, along with presentation and writing.

I asked Dr. Reg Grant, Chairmen of the new department to comment on why he chose to make Tim DTS’s first hire in this program. He told me:

“Tim brings a dynamic love for Jesus Christ, which informs and shapes his love for his family, his pastoral care for his students, and his passion for writing. I originally contacted Tim on the strong recommendation of Dr. Rob Johnston at Fuller. I’m really glad I took Rob’s advice. Our vision for the Department of Media Arts in Worship at DTS is to reveal the truth of God and the character of Jesus Christ through the arts to the world.  We want to equip students to think biblically and theologically about art in general, and about their discipline in particular. Dr. Tim Basselin will help us realize that vision.”

I could not agree more!

Congratulations, Tim! All of us in the Two Handed Warriors community are excited to see what the divine author has dreamed up for you in the next chapter of your story!

Tim and his wife, Robin, have three children and enjoy road trips, camping, and adjusting to life in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
