Biola Cinema and Media Arts
The mission of the Cinema and Media Arts department is to educate our students in the history, principles, art, craft, and technology of storytelling through media and prepare them for a career envisioned as a calling. We endeavor to work out the enduring truths found in the person and work of Christ, and the entire Christian Scriptures, in an effort to create and bring to market transcendent, authentic, redemptive stories.
Our goal is to prepare our students spiritually, intellectually, and professionally to become exceptional visual storytellers who can compete and succeed with the best of the best in the areas of film, television, and digital media. Our experienced faculty challenge students towards this goal, pushing their storytelling and productions to new heights of achievement through extensive projects in and outside of the classroom.
Writer/Director Scott Derrickson
Director/Screenwriter Scott Derrickson (Sinister, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Exorcism of Emily Rose) is a 1987 graduate. He believes: ”Biola continues to emerge as one of the best places around for young Christian filmmakers and visual artists to develop a point of view, and to become excellent.”

Last year, YouTube awarded $35,000 to Biola CMA student Zach King in their “NextUp” videographer contest . Zach’s cool “IPad Hologram Setting” video (below) is now at 1.7 million views and growing. (Read the LA Times story on Zach, here.)

Mark Zoradi, Former President of Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group, also resonates with Biola CMA’s mission. “Raising a new generation of entertainment professionals with core values like integrity, compassion, and responsibility is why I’m involved at Biola. I believe these graduates will have a very positive effect on the industry.”

2012 Student Film
Each semester Biola’s CMA students create and produce a film from inception to completion. We fill out every position on the crew, from Director to Writer, and from Gaffer down to Production Assistant. On a small budget and a 4 month time limit, our project is final completed and ready to bring to audiences.
Well known for their annual Biola Media Conference at CBS Radford studios, Biola’s Cinema and Media Arts program is dedicated to training visual storytellers whose voices and images will go on to shape culture and change the world.
This year’s project, AWAY, is a story of finding the path between following your dreams and making other’s dreams come true. It’s Lara’s growing up story as she is faced with the decision to go back to college or stay behind and care for her little sister who is about to have a baby. Which life she will choose? It’s an intense struggle of Lara’s hopes and fears fighting for which one she wants to follow. Will she succumb to fear or follow her hopes and dreams?
